Get on a local repeater and talk to local hams. They can tell you which frequency to monitor during severe weather. Kick back and listen. Check into the net if it gets bad in your county. The net control station may ask to to go to a certain place or you may spot from home and report what you see.

For the most part, yes. Because they will be relaying the information to the NWS you should give them info just like if you were giving it to the NWS directly.

You might want to join the Boulder Amateur Radio Club. Looks like they run the local ARES & RACES on their repeater 146.700.

one thing to remember,, ok, a couple:
don't hog the freq with info they dont' need. and please keep it short and to the point. several time I wanted to report something and the radio was tied up w/ unnessesary conversation.
some people just like to gab, that's ok, me too. but know when to listen, and when to transmit.
Net Control might be wanting to give out updates. that's there job. spotters job is to spot and report what they see to cooberate what the Net Control relays (which is usualy what NOAA is telling them)

Yes, I always hate to hear people reporting the sky darkening or the rain starting to pick up. These waste everyone's time.

Another suggestion, is the areas that you're out spotting in, look up the local Skywarn Frequencies. Majority of the time, it's one of the bigger radio clubs repeaters.

146.670- here.

I agree with Cypher, check out the area you are going to for Sky warn Ham radio groups or frequencies. My cell is programed with all NOAA station in my surrounding report area and my Ham radio is programed with Sky-warn channels ( but I'm not a Ham). Just use the radio for monitoring but I'm ready either way.

Remember listen first to the net. Only the NWS can make an Skywarn net official . If done right the net control operator will use only specfic area spotters. I have been a net control operator many of times and have had to ask certian operators to stand down because of the useless information given was holding the net up so make sure the information you give is factual as much as possible and criteria is used for the report is correct.
